When production shared a link to the potential location for our latest Adult Swim collaboration, I couldn’t believe the synchronicity. I’ve spent countless hours practicing yoga at One Down Dog’s Silverlake location.
You’d think that transforming a yoga studio into a therapist’s office would be an easy feat, however art department had to remove giant built-in shelving and bring in a ton of furniture into this somewhat blank canvas.
From a production standpoint, the studio worked perfectly. The exposed ceiling gave us tons of overhead rigging points and Matt Marenyi and his producing team secured the alley outside the windows for full control of lighting.
When Paul B. Cummings shared the news that we’d be reuniting with Elyse Mirto who starred in our previous commercial, I couldn’t be more thrilled. As predicted, she hit another home run with her performance. As you can see in the video below, her only practical co-star required numerous takes to get things right.
Paul wanted a documentary feel, so we elected to shoot the therapy session handheld. Following this logic, we couldn’t get too close to the subjects and needed the coverage to appear as though we had several camera ops capturing everything live simultaneously. In reality, we only had one camera operator: Joshua Allen.
We flirted with getting zoom lenses, but since we didn’t want to have any during shots, we stuck with primes. For the second shoot in a row, we paired my ARRI Alexa 35 with my Zeiss Super Speeds. I’m loving this combo!
Thanks to Paul and Matt for bringing me onto yet another fun shoot.
