Cinematographer, Dustin Pearlman Recounts His 2020 in 10 Pictures

Here we go, it’s time for the 8th annual year in review! I tried crafting something poetic and reflective about 2020, but I found it far too challenging in an already challenging year. Here’s a tweet from a funny Mashable list that I found thanks to Google instead!

And on to the countdown…

Before the world got flipped upside down, I had the pleasure of joining the OFFICIAL team at the Universal Music Group’s annual Grammy events. This is always a highlight and 2020 proved no exception. UMG scored big and we were blessed with an intimate performance from the label’s superstar Billie Eilish.

Anna Rak and I discussed getting a dog for ages. The moment the pandemic struck, we frantically searched the internet for a third member of the household. On March 21, we drove to Fontana to meet our future best friend. Iris represents a shining light in a year of darkness. She inspired us to shoot spec commercials for Chewy and Petfinder and regularly update her Instagram: @hangingwithiris. #pandemicpuppy #minischnauzer

Thanks to the pandemic/stay at home orders, I’ve spent exponentially more time with my parents in San Diego. I used this opportunity to film interviews with my Mom & Dad to document our family history. It will be a while until I have something to share, but I completed a fun short film, Family Time, from my Boston visit last October.

I spent a memorable 4 days with a legendary actor shooting parts of a feature at his home in San Diego. The storyline required a unique filmmaking approach and I’m excited to watch the end product. That being said, I never want to see a Logitech BRIO or SlingStudio again in my life.

Before leaving for Europe in July, Anna and I shot another short film together. To give each scene the most ideal natural lighting, filming stretched across several days. Filmmaking without time constraints is so luxurious!

2020 became the year of remote shooting and my rental inventory adapted to that reality. For this shoot, we ZOOM’d our 2 camera feed to Toronto for the rest of our creative team to monitor. I particularly enjoyed using video projectors to change our interviewee’s background elements while my lighting set-up remained stationary throughout the day.

American Girl’s latest doll turns 1980s nostalgia all the way up to 11. To celebrate the release of Courtney Moore, they teamed up with Nickelodeon and Hayley LeBlanc to send them on an 80's Adventure set to the familiar sounds of Cyndi Lauper's Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.

We spent a fun day making Krusteaz pancakes with Paulina Lopez Velazquez and her family. If you haven’t been to Guelaguetza Restaurant, then go now! You can watch the full video here.

To help Joe Biden become the 46th President, DeVon Franklin and Megan Good hosted a Get Out The Vote event. Spending a morning with friends supporting our candidate was a perfect work day!

It’s been a long (four) year(s). 2020 saw so many protests, marches, and civil unrest. While it took a few extra stressful days to learn the election results, taking to the streets on November 7 documenting joyful demonstrations felt great.

Happy New Year! I wish all the best to you and your family. May 2021 bring better things for us all.

Please share your 2020 photographic highlights in the comments section below! In the 7 years I’ve made these posts, not one person has shared any. Let’s change that, OK?
