Maine Bound for ‘Up Country’

I had a news/updates section on my website a few years ago. I enjoyed adding new jobs, but after a few fell through, I vowed that I wouldn’t announce jobs until they had started. Probably sound logic considering I’ve heard from many people that for every 4 jobs that you book, only 1 will actually happen. Pretty sad, right?

Anyways, I’ve been waiting to make this official announcement, but now that I have a round-trip ticket booked and we are less than a week away from production, I might as well make the announcement. I’m joining New England filmmaker, Lucas McNelly, for his upcoming film “Up Country“. This project presents a few exciting “firsts” for me.

-Lucas raised money solely with kickstarter. The future of film financing? Only time will tell. In any event, it’s a really unique way to raise money.

-I found out about the movie when I saw our mutual Twitter friend, Angelo Bell, retweeting Lucas’s vacancy in the camera department (I’m planning to blog more about this detail later). So never say Twitter didn’t do anything for you!

-I will be using the Canon 7D DSLR to capture the moving images. This is kind of a big deal. Yes, I’m a canon man. I’ve owned my 5D since January of 2007 and think their digital imaging is great, HOWEVER I’m not happy with the infiltration of these cameras into the narrative world. I’m going to blog about this shortly, but this video is a great summation of my feelings…

In the case of this film, however, the 7D is a good candidate because we aren’t trying to turn it into a studio camera (which is a crime that should be punished by the filmmaking police). We are using it handheld in something of a verite style. We aren’t trying to pretend it is film. We are going to lose highlight details and that is part of the aesthetic. We are going into the woods with very little equipment, which is scary but liberating on the same token.

That’s all for now…hopefully I’ll have some opportunities in the deep woods of Maine to do some blog updates!
