First day of Up Country is in the can…and was quite an adventure.
We had trouble locking down a grip/electric house because of an insurance issue, an actor who headed in to take a shower five minutes before call time, and two night exteriors with just 2 x 1K PAR cans, a Source Four Leko, and a 250W Photoflood…
That being said, I’m really happy with how it all turned out. We battled some rain, but the up side to that was the wonderful diffusion in the sky. yeah, we lost some time waiting the heavy stuff out, but I’m surprisingly happy with the 7D (although when the sun was out, the contrast ratios were as bad as I had feared). The size/weight was great for some of the chasing through the woods where I could just take the camera off of the shoulder rig and hand hold the body. Yeah, there was crazy rolling shutter, but we are just rolling with the punches…it’s supposed to be frantic/frenetic.
I will say that my favorite aspect of the 7D is that when I see a great production still, I don’t have to reach over for my 5D to grab one, I can just use the production camera that’s already on my shoulder! That’s also incredibly fucked up. Welcome to the future.
JP and I often joke about how we used the HVX to shoot the feature AND the behind the scenes/making of “Act Naturally” (at least the film also used the Letus 35mm Adapter). Very soon we’ll have movies that are not only shooting the main production and behind the stills with the same camera, but the still photographer will likely have the same body too…are you ready for that?
OK, It’s off to bed before our three plus hour drive up to the cabin where we will be shooting the remaining 85% or so of the film.
